Why Do I Keep Repeating the Same Relationship Patterns?

My clients often ask me, “Why do I keep ending up in the same kind of relationship, why do I keep attracting the same kind of person?” It can feel like it’s happening by chance, or by some twist of fate; but a psychodynamic perspective, repeating relationship patterns may be connected to experiences and emotional dynamics that began years ago, often as far back as early childhood.

Formative relationships help shape our expectations of ourselves and others. If, for example, love was inconsistent, emotionally unavailable, or conditional, we may unconsciously develop beliefs about what relationships are supposed to feel like. As adults, we can then be drawn towards familiar dynamics—even when they are painful—because the familiar can feel safer than the unknown. Our unconscious is a powerful driver, primed to repeat unless we can make the process conscious and start to question, and even challenge it.

Carl Jung said - "Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate"... We are also very often drawn to repeat processes in the hope that we might be able to one day, create a different outcome. We have a perception of power as adults which we do not have as children, and we can be unknowingly attempting to heal the deficit we held as a child by repeating and creating a different outcome as an adult.

This is sometimes described as repetition compulsion: the tendency to repeat unresolved emotional experiences.

This does not mean we are destined to repeat our past. Becoming curious about our patterns can be the first step towards changing them. Therapy can provide a safe space to explore where these patterns originated, how they affect relationships today, and what emotions may be underneath them.

Understanding the past isn't about blaming it. It is about developing greater awareness, choice, and freedom in the present.
